Traditional navigators had no instruments. They had to keep a record of where they had been in their heads.
Navigators used a star compass to read the night sky and follow the stars.
Good navigators will take the sails down and wait for clear weather so they do not go off course on a dull or very dark night when they cannot see the stars or moon.:)
