12/5/2016 -Waka Voyaging -Reading

Find, select and Retrieve information. Learning which information Is important. We used a the LearNZ website to find and select the most important information.

TITLE: Waka Voyaging


Learning intention: Find literal  information in a text in order to answer a question.
From the information provided, write up at least 3 facts of importance in each box.
Traditional navigators 
had no instruments.  They had to keep a record of where they had been in their heads.
Navigators used a star compass to read the night sky and follow the stars.
Good navigators will take the sails down and wait for clear weather so they do not go off course on a dull or very dark night when they cannot see the stars or moon.:)
Nukutaiao waka hourua
The carvings represent ancestral gold.
It weighs 4.5 tons  and is fourteen meters long.
The Waka can have eight people sleeping in hatches.
Exploring the pacific.
Thousand of year ago our ancestors were  exploring the pacific ocean for land.
They exploring the pacific for food because  there families wanted more.
It was a migration that took Thousands of year. These people were  the greatest waka builders  and salier.s

Aotearoa helped set up the tribe.
It was help to get fish  and to fight.
Waka hourua is ancient craft that would have carried the first settlers to New Zealand.

Food managements.
Food is very important for survival when sailing on the open sea.
At times it can be cold and other times very tiring living on the moana.
Before sailing, the crew and whānau work out how long it will take to reach their destination.
